How Much Time Do We Spend on Food-Related Chores Every Day?

In today’s busy world, it’s no surprise that people are always looking for ways to save time. One area where many of us invest a substantial amount of time is food-related chores, such as shopping, meal preparation, cooking, eating, and cleaning up afterward. But just how much time do we really spend on these tasks each day? Let’s take a closer look.

1. Meal Planning and Grocery Shopping

Before we even begin cooking, we need to decide what to eat and buy the ingredients. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Americans spend about 53 minutes per week on grocery shopping. This averages out to around 8-10 minutes per day, although it can vary based on shopping habits, whether you meal plan, or how often you visit the store. Some people may also spend extra time researching recipes or making shopping lists, pushing that daily total higher.

2. Meal Preparation and Cooking

This part of the process can take up quite a bit of time. A study conducted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) found that the average American spends 37 minutes per day cooking. This time varies significantly based on meal complexity. For example, a quick sandwich might take 5 minutes, while a more elaborate dinner with multiple components could take well over an hour.

Luckily, Annes Matlådor make it easier for you to skip meal prep entirely. We deliver fresh, healthy and a Michelin star chef-made meals right to your door in reusable canteens and food containers, so all you have to do is heat and enjoy. This means no time spent shopping for ingredients or preparing meals—you can enjoy nutritious, gourmet dishes without the hassle.

3. Eating Meals

When it comes to actually sitting down to enjoy food, the time spent can vary depending on the setting. A typical meal at home takes around 20-30 minutes, and assuming three meals a day, that adds up to 60-90 minutes per day. If meals are eaten with family or friends, or while multitasking (like watching TV), this time could be extended. A 2019 study on American eating habits showed that eating and drinking takes up around 1.2 hours each day.

With Annes, you’ll not only enjoy chef-prepared meals, but also have the flexibility to eat on your own schedule—whether at home, at work, or on the go—without sacrificing quality or taste.

4. Cleaning Up

The final step is cleaning up, which includes tasks like washing dishes, wiping down counters, and putting away leftovers. Research suggests that the average person spends about 15-30 minutes per day on kitchen cleanup. This time depends heavily on the type of meal being cooked. A one-pot meal will obviously require much less cleanup than a multi-course feast with several dishes.

Since Annes Matlådor delivers meals in reusable canteens and containers, cleanup is minimal. Just enjoy your meal and return the containers for your next delivery—saving you even more time and effort in the kitchen.

Total Time Spent on Food-Related Chores

When you add up all these tasks, the average person is spending anywhere from 2 to 4 hours per day on food-related chores. Here’s a breakdown:

  • Grocery shopping: 10-15 minutes
  • Meal preparation and cooking: 30-90 minutes
  • Eating: 60-90 minutes
  • Cleaning up: 15-30 minutes

By choosing Annes Matlådor, you can significantly reduce this time and focus on what matters most—whether that’s spending time with loved ones, pursuing hobbies, or simply relaxing after a long day. Our service lets you enjoy healthy, delicious meals with none of the hassle.

I hope you in the near future will deliver food to Uppsala as well, because I am very willing to try your food. As a student this sounds very good to me as I would rather study or take it easy than cook several days a week.
